Often allied with the Crown, the clan played a pivotal role in the Border conflicts during the thirteenth century. Sir James Johnston of Johnston became Earl of Hartfell in 1633 after being elevated to Lord Johnston of Lochwood. In 1661, his son was named Earl of Annandale, continuing the lineage of prominence. In addition to representing the clan’s heritage, this tartan symbolizes a lineage of strength and nobility.
