Many people are perplexed about fly plaids: what exactly is a fly plaid, how should one wear a fly plaid, and should one buy one or not? I’m just working on a new guide to help you with all of these questions. I am developing a new guide on “How to Wear a Fly Plaid,” after earlier sharing with you a guide on wearing a kilt and upholding the same trend.
What is a fly plaid?
Usually known as the Feileadh Mor, or the Great Kilt, the kilt has been around since the 16th century. All it was was a long piece of tartan cloth belted at the waist and wrapped around the body. After wrapping, the remaining cloth was hung on the shoulder and subsequently gathered frontward with the belt.
Over time, the kilt underwent changes, leading to a decrease in the fabric used for its construction. As a result, the fabric used for the over-the-shoulder became a new product known as Fly Plaid. This is where fly plaid originated.
How do I wear a fly plaid?
So let’s talk about the proper fly plaid wearing technique. Traditionally, you wear a fly plaid alongside a kilt, either in an Argyll jacket or a Prince Charlie jacket.
The tartan of Fly Plaid should complement the tartan of your kilt. It should be draped over your left shoulder, then pulled through your jacket’s epaulet, and then pinned with a fly plaid brooch. From our collection, you can wear any brooch to symbolize your clan.
➡️ You will look completely Scottish from this angle.
Should you wear a fly plaid?
You might wear fly plaid if you are attending a formal event. Highland Dress does not describe it as a necessary component. A fly plaid is regarded as “too formal” some of the time; hence, it is advisable to ask the host whether you should wear one to the event.
In some cases, wearing a fly plaid is inappropriate; for example, it would be improper to wear a fly plaid to a wedding that is not your own, as you might be embarrassing the groom.
You might also sport it in a pipe band uniform.
In Conclusion
This was thus all about fly plaids, and I am sure you know the proper way to wear a tartan fly plaid. Should you wish to personalize this article, kindly let us know what you think.
