Chisholm Clan Origins & History

Scottish Attire is proud to present the Chisholm Tartan, a bold and historic symbol of Scottish heritage. The wearing of this tartan is a symbol of centuries of loyalty, courage, and the fearlessness of this clan. From Norman beginnings to Highland strongholds, the Chisholm legacy continues to inspire.

The Legendary Origins of the Chisholm Clan

As Cheseholm in the Scottish Borders, the Chisholm name has Norman and Saxon roots. The name is derived from the Norman word chese, which means “to choose,” and the Saxon word holm, which means “meadow.”. The Chisholms settled in Roxburghshire in the 13th century, but Erchless Castle in Strathglass, Inverness, was acquired through marriage in the 14th century. As a result, they began to be known as Highlanders.

Where the Chisholm Name Comes From

“Chisholm” evolved from “de Cheseholm,” combining Norman and Saxon roots. Over time, variations such as Chisholme, Chisolm, and Chism emerged. Chisholms are called Siosalach in Gaelic, and the clan is called Clann Siosal in Gaelic.

A Powerful Highland Clan

Chisholms were strong and loyal, known for their daring and fierceness. Wiland Chisholm of Comar raided Clan Rose’s lands in 1498 and stole hundreds of animals. In the 18th century, during the Jacobite Rising of 1745, the clan sided with Bonnie Prince Charlie. Around 80 Chisholms fought at Culloden, where many died. During his escape, the clan also provided shelter for the Prince. A legacy of fearlessness and resilience was built by the Chisholms through war, feuds, and loyalty to the Stuart cause.

Castles & Strongholds

Clan Chisholm used to hold court at Erchless Castle, a 13th-century fortress in Strathglass. Since it was acquired through marriage in the 14th century, it served as the clan’s home until the 20th century. The lands of the Chisholms were surrounded by the Glen Affric and Glen Cannich wildernesses. Even though Erchless is now private property, it remains a symbol of Chisholm heritage.

Chisholm Tartan Colors & Pattern

In a symmetrical crisscross pattern, the Chisholm Tartan features red, green, blue, and white colors. Each color represents part of a clan’s identity:

  • Red: The bravery and fierce spirit of the Chisholms.

  • Green: The forested Highland lands of Strathglass.

  • Blue: The lochs and rivers of the north.

  • White Lines: A symbol of honor and clarity.

As a symbol of their Highland roots, this tartan has been representing the clan since the 1800s.

Chisholm Tartan Variations

The Chisholm Tartan is available in five beautiful versions:

  • Chisholm Ancient: Soft, earthy tones resembling vegetable-dyed fabrics of the past.

  • Chisholm Modern: Rich, bright colors with bold contrast for a contemporary look.

  • Chisholm Hunting: Muted browns and greens — perfect for outdoor wear.

  • Chisholm Weathered: A faded, antique look with subtle natural shades.

  • Chisholm Dress: A formal variation with a lighter base, ideal for sashes and ceremonies.

In each version, you can carry the clan’s legacy in your own style.

Clan Symbols & Pride

A hand holding a dagger pierces the head of a boar, symbolizing strength and protection.
A strong warrior spirit is reflected in the clan’s motto, Feros ferio (“I am fierce with the fierce”).
Plant Badge: Fern — symbolizing endurance and Highland nature.
