Historical Significance

This tartan honors the distinguished Dunbar family, who are deeply rooted in Scottish heritage. Crinan of Dunkeld, the renowned Thane and Seneschal of the Isles, was born around 975. In addition to being the father of King Duncan I, Crinan was also the revered grandfather of Gospatric. While Black Agnes valiantly defended the castle against the Earl of Salisbury, the castle witnessed pivotal moments in Scotland’s history. King Malcolm III granted Dunbar lands to Gospatric, who rose to the rank of Earl. While their castle walls withstood English attacks in 1338, their indomitable spirit shone through. Clan Cameron’s 1598 raid caused turmoil, but strategic marriages connected their lineage to the esteemed Earl of Moray title. Although they forfeited the Earldom in 1435, their fortunes flourished in Moray despite a feud with Clan Innes. Sir James Michael, the 39th Hereditary Chief of the Name and Arms, and 14th Baronet of Mochrum, continued their legacy through numerous cadet branches. He embodies the values of honor and valor embodied in this tartan as a retired Colonel in the United States Air Force.
