The Scottish Highlands were initially patrolled and kept peaceful by six “watch” companies formed by General George Wade. They were responsible for preventing fights between clans, bringing criminals to justice, and disarming men carrying weapons.

The regiment’s Gaelic name, “Am Freiceadan Dubh”, means “The Dark or Black Watch”, and refers to the regiment’s dark tartan and role as a sentinel force in the Highlands. As a result of its distinguished and trusted reputation, the Black Watch became a part of almost every major campaign in British history.
