Black Watch Tartan & Clan

At Scottish Attire, we are proud to present the Black Watch Tartan, a symbol of one of Scotland’s most prestigious regiments and an iconic piece of Scottish heritage. It honors those who have fought bravely in some of the world’s most significant battles whenever you wear this tartan.

The Rise of Black Watch

One of the most revered regiments in the history of the British Army, the Black Watch Tartan is closely associated with it. In the aftermath of the First Jacobite Rebellion of 1715, the regiment was officially formed in 1725. The Scottish Highlands were initially patrolled and kept peaceful by six “watch” companies formed by General George Wade. They were responsible for preventing fights between clans, bringing criminals to justice, and disarming men carrying weapons.

The regiment’s Gaelic name, “Am Freiceadan Dubh”, means “The Dark or Black Watch”, and refers to the regiment’s dark tartan and role as a sentinel force in the Highlands. As a result of its distinguished and trusted reputation, the Black Watch became a part of almost every major campaign in British history.

Where Does the Name ‘Black Watch’ Come From?

The name Black Watch is derived from the dark hues of the tartan worn by its soldiers, which reflected the regiment’s unique role in keeping peace and protecting highlands. A regiment’s primary responsibility was to maintain peace between clans, and the tartan’s dark colors emphasized this.

A Legendary Regiment

The Black Watch has been involved in almost every major military campaign since it was formed in 1725, including battles in Europe, Africa, and Asia. A great deal of bravery, honor, and resilience have contributed to the regiment’s place in history. After becoming an integral part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland (3 SCOTS), the Black Watch regiment continued to serve the British Army with distinction.

Black Watch Tartan Colors and Patterns

Due to its distinctive color palette and design, the Black Watch Tartan is instantly recognizable. As well as representing the regiment’s Scottish heritage, the tartan is traditionally woven using shades of blue, green, black, and dark red. Black Watch Tartan comes in a variety of variations, including:

  • Black Watch Ancient: Softened hues of green and blue, reflecting the traditional colors used by the regiment’s soldiers in earlier times.

  • Black Watch Modern: Bold blue, green, and black with deep red accents, designed to capture the contemporary spirit of the regiment.

  • Black Watch Weathered: Earthy tones of brown and grey, giving the tartan a more rustic, rugged look that honors the regiment’s long history.

  • Black Watch Hunting: A darker version of the tartan, designed for outdoor pursuits but equally fitting for everyday wear.

  • Black Watch Dress: A more refined version of the tartan, perfect for formal occasions, with a blend of dark blue, green, and black hues.

Who Wears Black Watch Tartan? – Associated Names

The Black Watch Tartan has traditionally been associated with several Scottish clans that provided soldiers for the regiment’s formation:

Campbell, Fraser of Lovat, Grant, Munro.

A number of these clans were instrumental in creating the Black Watch regiment, with soldiers drawn from these distinguished families to form the six original companies. The Black Watch Tartan honors both the regiment’s legacy as well as the noble clans who contributed to its strength.

Clan Symbols & Pride

  • Motto: “Nemo me impune lacessit” — “No One Provokes Me With Impunity” — This bold and fearless motto reflects the Black Watch’s unyielding resolve and dedication to their mission of maintaining order and peace.

  • Regimental Crest: The crest of the Black Watch features the image of a lion, symbolizing courage and strength. Historically, the regiment has been synonymous with bravery and resilience.
