Historical Context

Nova Scotia Tartan is the emblem of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, which translates to “New Scotland.” It was designed as a backdrop for a farming exhibition in 1953 by Mrs. Douglas Murray, President of the Halifax N.S. Weavers Guild. In September 1955, the Lieutenant Governor in Council approved it as the first officially recognized Canadian provincial tartan. Moreover, it was the first tartan recorded by the Court of Lord Lyon, which marked an important milestone in Canadian and Scottish history.
