McKay Clan Origins & History
The McKay Tartan is a symbol of ancient Highland roots, courage, and loyalty. The McKay tartan goes beyond choosing a pattern. It’s a proud connection to a clan known for its fierce independence, storied past, and enduring presence in Scotland’s rugged north.
The Legendary Origins of the McKay Clan
A clan known as the McKay (Gaelic: Mac Aoidh, meaning “son of Aodh”). They trace their origins back to the ancient kingdom of Moray. In the 14th century, the clan had firmly established its power in Strathnaver, a wild and beautiful region in northwest Sutherland. Their contributions to national and local conflicts over the centuries were known as both warlike and politically astute.
Where the McKay Name Comes From
The name McKay is derived from the Gaelic Mac Aoidh, which means “son of Hugh.” Over the years, the name has evolved into a variety of spelling variations, but all stem from a clan known for its strength, independence, and military service. It was the MacKays’ leadership and loyalty that were widely respected, especially during Scottish wars and political turmoil.
A Powerful Northern Clan
Robert the Bruce, and later the Jacobite uprisings, were supported by the McKays, who raised independent regiments to defend the British crown. Their most prominent leader, Donald McKay, was appointed 1st Lord Reay and led troops in Europe during the Thirty Years’ War. Despite bloody feuds, especially with the Sutherlands, the clan managed to secure peace through strategic marriages. It was through all of this that they earned their motto, “Manu Forti,” which means “With a Strong Hand.”
Castles & Strongholds
Castle Varrich, one of the medieval strongholds along the Kyle of Tongue, served as the ancestral seat of Clan McKay. It served as the clan’s early fortress and still stands today as a symbol of their strength. In later centuries, the clan chiefs moved to Tongue House, located near the original castle, which became the home of the Lords Reay. A proud part of Highland history, Mackay Country stretched across northern Sutherland.
McKay Tartan Colors & Pattern
McKay Tartan is a bold and striking design featuring deep green, navy blue, and black with subtle yellow-gold lines. Each color has a meaning:
Green & Blue – Representing the landscapes and coastal waters of Sutherland.
Black – Symbolizing the clan’s strength and defiance.
Early in the 19th century, the Highland Society of London officially recorded the McKay tartan.
McKay Tartan Variations
There are four beautiful versions of the McKay Tartan available:
-
McKay Ancient – Soft, weathered shades mimicking natural dyes of early Highland weavers.
-
McKay Modern – Deep and vivid tones that reflect the strength of the clan’s legacy.
-
McKay Weathered – A rustic, faded version with muted colors and vintage charm.
-
McKay Dress (Blue) – A lighter, formal design incorporating brighter blue tones and vibrant accents.
Wearers can express their heritage through their personal style with each version.
Clan Symbols & Pride
Crest: A right arm holding a dagger upright — a traditional symbol of readiness and courage.
Motto: Manu Forti (“With a Strong Hand”) — reflecting the clan’s strength and resilience.
Bulrush – symbolizes the natural environment of the clan’s homeland and humility in strength.
Families That Share the Heritage
In order to understand why Scotland has over 2,000 tartans, it’s important to know that many clans are made up of septs, which are connected by blood, marriage, or loyalty. Those bearing the McKay name, for example, do not wear the McKay tartan exclusively. The clan crest is also proudly worn by families with ancestral ties to the clan.
The names Allan, Bain (or Bayne), Kay (or Key), MacAllan, and MacBain are among them. MacCaa, MacCaw, MacCay, MacGaw, MacGee, MacGhee, and MacGhie are also associated names. As well as MacKee, MacKie, MacPhail, MacQue, MacQuey, and MacQuoid, MacVail, MacVain, and MacVane, the connections continue through names like MacKee, MacKie, MacPhail, MacQue, MacQuey, and MacQuoid. The McKay heritage extends to families named Morgan, Neilson (or Nelson), Paul, Pole, Poleson, Polson, Reay, Scobie, and Williamson – all carrying forward the clan’s proud traditions. It is possible that you have ties to this historic clan, even if your surname isn’t McKay.
The McKay Clan Today
The Clan McKay community is vibrant and active around the world. Since 1888, the Clan Mackay Society has connected members worldwide through events, scholarships, and cultural programs. The current chief, Aeneas Simon Mackay, 15th Lord Reay, has strong ties to both Scotland and the Netherlands. Throughout “Mackay Country” and beyond, clan gatherings, Highland Games, and cultural celebrations continue to honor McKay ancestors’ legacy.
