Colquhoun Clan Origins & History

At Scottish Attire, we proudly present the Colquhoun Tartan — a reflection of centuries-old honor, resilience, and noble heritage. Embracing the Colquhoun tartan takes you on a journey that weaves together Highland courage, Lowland legacy, and the legendary shores of Loch Lomond.

The Legendary Origins of the Colquhoun Clan

In the 13th century, Humphrey de Kilpatrick gained control of the lands of Colquhoun, Auchentorily, and Dumbuck in Dunbartonshire. The Colquhoun surname was adopted by his descendants. In 1368, Sir Robert Colquhoun married the heiress of the Luss estate, cementing the clan’s dominance around Loch Lomond and establishing its leadership for centuries to come.

Where the Colquhoun Name Comes From

“Colquhoun” comes from the Gaelic “cuil chumhann,” meaning “narrow corner,” referring to the original lands near Old Kilpatrick. While the spelling and pronunciation of the name changed over time, one of the most prominent families in western Scotland continued to bear the name.

A Powerful Highland-Lowland Clan

Throughout history, the Colquhoun family held significant power as both warriors and royal allies. Sir John Colquhoun served as governor of Dumbarton Castle and Sheriff of Dunbarton in the 15th century. Legend says he secured the castle through cunning, resulting in the clan motto of “Si Je Puis” (If I can). Colquhouns and MacGregors engaged in a historic battle in 1603 at Glen Fruin, where Colquhouns suffered a tragic loss, with over 200 members of the clan dying. All MacGregors were outlawed by James VI as retribution. Despite such challenges, the Colquhouns remained loyal to the Crown and expanded their influence throughout history.

Castles & Strongholds

A strategic location on the River Clyde made Dunglass Castle the first stronghold of the Colquhoun clan. In the 15th century, the family moved their seat to Rossdhu Castle on Loch Lomond. As the family residence, Rossdhu House replaced the medieval structure in the 18th century. Since the lands of Luss have deep spiritual and historical connections, they have become the heartland of the clan.

Colquhoun Tartan Colors & Pattern

Colquhoun Tartan features forest green, navy blue, and black overstripes with fine white and bold red. Each color tells a story about the clan:

  • Green & Blue: Representing the wooded lands and lochs of Dunbartonshire.

  • Black: A mark of strength and dignity.

  • White Lines: Symbolizing clarity and purpose.

  • Red Stripe: A reminder of sacrifice and courage in clan history.

In the 19th century, this tartan was officially documented and has remained a symbol of the clan’s identity ever since.

Colquhoun Tartan Variations

Colquhoun Tartan is available in three beautiful versions:

  • Colquhoun Ancient: Softened tones for a weathered, traditional appearance.

  • Colquhoun Modern: Bold, rich colors that reflect a confident legacy.

  • Colquhoun Dress: A lighter, more festive version with a pale base for formal and celebratory wear.

Depending on your style, you can wear your heritage in a way that suits you.

Clan Symbols & Pride

Crest: A stag’s head (hart) cabossed, symbolizing vigilance, strength, and nobility.
Motto: Si Je Puis (“If I can”) — reflecting quiet strength and personal resolve.
Plant Badge: Hazel sapling — associated with wisdom, protection, and Celtic tradition.

Families That Share the Heritage

Scotland’s vast number of clans includes multiple surnames, which explains why there are so many tartans – over 2,000 in fact. Colquhoun Tartan is proudly worn not just by those named Cowan, Ingram, Kilpatrick, King, Kirkpatrick, Laing, McCowan, McMain, McManus, McLintock, or McOwan.

There is a good chance that your name isn’t Colquhoun, but you might be part of this proud legacy.

The Colquhoun Clan Today

Through its global community, the Colquhoun clan flourishes today. The current chief is Sir Malcolm Rory Colquhoun of Luss, 9th Baronet, who maintains strong ties with the ancestral lands. Luss on Loch Lomond still hosts the Luss Highland Games, where Colquhoun family members and enthusiasts gather to celebrate their heritage and culture. Clan Colquhoun International Society reunites descendants worldwide, keeping alive the spirit of “Si Je Puis.”
