Campbell Clan Origins & History

Scottish Attire is proud to offer the Campbell Tartan – a bold and enduring symbol of Highland authority, loyalty, and heritage. By wearing this tartan, you are connecting with a powerful clan that has shaped Scotland’s history for centuries.

The Legendary Origins of the Campbell Clan

Campbell Clan has its origins in western Scotland, in Argyll, dating from the early 13th century. After Cailean Mór (Great Colin), a descendant of Gillespie Campbell, established the Campbell family around Loch Awe, the name gained prominence. Cailean’s marriage alliance gave Campbell control over Loch Awe. Campbells expanded rapidly from this point on, often at the expense of rival clans like MacDougalls.

In the 15th century, the Campbells had become the most powerful clan in the Highlands. Robert the Bruce rewarded them with favor, lands, and titles for their strategic loyalty. In 1445, Sir Duncan Campbell became Lord Campbell, and his son became the 1st Earl of Argyll. This was the beginning of the Campbell family’s legacy as noble guardians of the western Highlands.

Where the Campbell Name Comes From

Campbell derives from the Gaelic “Caimbeul,” meaning “crooked mouth,” made up of the words cam (“crooked”) and beul (“mouth”). It began as a nickname and soon became a well-known surname in Scotland. There are more than 30,000 Campbells across the world today – found in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Canada, the U.S., Australia, and Jamaica.

A Powerful Highland Clan

Campbells became powerful through alliances with the king and military service. In Scottish and British politics, their chiefs became Earls and Dukes of Argyll, becoming some of the most influential nobles. In civil wars and Jacobite uprisings, the Campbells supported the Reformation and the Crown.

Massacre of Glencoe in 1692, in which government soldiers, including some from Clan Campbell, killed members of Clan MacDonald after accepting their hospitality, is one of the most dramatic chapters in clan history. Although controversial, the act was politically motivated and is still debated today.

The Campbells were known across the Highlands for their loyalty to the government, making them both respected and feared.

Castles & Strongholds

At the beginning of the Campbell era, Innis Chonnell Castle on Loch Awe was the strongest Campbell stronghold. Dukes of Argyll moved to Inveraray Castle on Loch Fyne as their power grew, and it remains their seat today.

The Lowlands clan acquired Castle Campbell near Dollar in the 15th century and used it as its eastern base. Originally known as Castle Gloom, it was renamed after falling under Campbell’s control. It is today a symbol of the clan’s cultural and strategic importance.

Campbell Tartan Colors & Pattern

With navy blue, green, and black in a crisscross pattern, the Campbell tartan is famously associated with the Black Watch regiment.

Each color reflects a key element of Campbell heritage:

  • Dark Green & Blue: Represent the forests and lochs of Argyll.

  • Black Stripes: Indicate strength, discipline, and the clan’s strong ties to government and military order.

As a symbol of the clan’s authority and loyalty, the tartan’s subdued tones made it perfect for battlefields and formal settings alike.

Campbell Tartan Variations

We offer multiple official Campbell tartans, each with a distinct tone and purpose:

  • Campbell Modern: Dark, vivid hues in the classic Black Watch pattern.

  • Campbell Ancient: Softer, faded tones resembling older natural dyes.

  • Campbell Weathered: Earthy browns and greys, imitating aged cloth.

  • Campbell Dress: Includes white for formal occasions and highland dancing.

  • Campbell of Breadalbane / Cawdor / Loudoun: Branch tartans with added color accents unique to each family.

  • Campbell Hunting: A muted, informal variation used for everyday wear.

In each variation, the proud heritage is honored while offering a choice in expression and tradition.

Clan Symbols & Pride

Crest: A boar’s head erased Or (gold), with silver tusks and red tongue — symbolizing courage and fierceness.
Motto: Ne Obliviscaris — “Forget Not” — a call to remember one’s heritage and loyalty.
Plant Badge: Bog Myrtle (Sweet Gale) — found in Argyll’s wetlands, symbolizing protection and endurance.
War Cry: Cruachan! — after Ben Cruachan, the sacred mountain of Campbell territory.

Families That Share the Heritage

Scotland has over 2,000 tartans, and many clans include multiple surnames. Campbell Tartan is worn with pride by Campbells and related families and septs, such as:

Ballantyne, Bannatyne, Burns, Donachie, Fisher, Hawes, Isaac, Keller, MacConochie, MacDiarmid, MacDonachie, MacGibbon, MacIver, MacIsaac, MacKellar, MacKissock, MacNiven, Orr, Paterson, Thompson, Ure, and a number of others.

You may be related to the extended Campbell family, even if your surname isn’t Campbell.

The Campbell Clan Today

The current chief is Torquhil Ian Campbell, 13th Duke of Argyll, or MacCailein Mór. Currently residing at Inveraray Castle, he continues to uphold the clan’s traditions. Campbell family members participate in international events and Highland games around the world, representing the clan.

Through cultural events, education, and genealogical research, the Clan Campbell Society unites members across the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the UK. In 17th century knitted hose and sweaters were adapted from Campbell tartans, which is also honored on National Argyle Day (January 8th).
