Leslie Clan Origins & History

At Scottish Attire, we’re honored to present the Leslie Tartan, a powerful symbol of Scottish nobility, resilience, and devotion. Wearing the Leslie tartan is more than a nod to ancestry — it’s a way to embody a thousand years of courage, loyalty, and legacy tied to the proud Clan Leslie.

The Legendary Origins of the Leslie Clan

The story of Clan Leslie traces back to the 11th century with a Hungarian nobleman named Bartolf, who arrived in Scotland in 1067. He was part of Edgar the Aetheling’s entourage, accompanying his sister Margaret, who would become the Queen of Scots through marriage to King Malcolm III.

Impressed by Bartolf’s intellect and bravery, King Malcolm appointed him Governor of Edinburgh Castle and granted him vast lands in Fife, Angus, the Mearns, and Aberdeenshire. Bartolf established his residence in the Garioch district of Aberdeenshire, building a stronghold that marked the beginning of the Leslie legacy in Scotland.

The Meaning Behind the Leslie Name

The name “Leslie” is believed to come from “Lesselyn,” the name of Bartolf’s original holding in Garioch. Over time, this evolved into Lesley, and then Leslie, along with related variations like Lesslie and Laslie. These names still represent one of the most influential and historically rooted Scottish clans.

A Clan of Warriors, Nobility & Statesmen

Clan Leslie played a major role in shaping Scottish history. They were:

  • Fierce warriors, notably fighting at the Battle of Bannockburn (1314) alongside Robert the Bruce.

  • Signatories of the Declaration of Arbroath (1320), asserting Scotland’s independence.

  • Military leaders like David Leslie, who defeated Montrose at Philiphaugh in 1645 and was later honored as Lord Newark after surviving imprisonment in the Tower of London.

From battlefields in France, Germany, and the Baltics to the corridors of Scottish power, Clan Leslie’s strength and diplomacy have left an enduring mark.

Castles & Ancestral Strongholds

The historical seat of Clan Leslie was Balquhain Castle, established in 1340 in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. Though destroyed in a feud with the Forbes family in 1526, it was rebuilt in 1530 and stood as a Leslie stronghold until 1710.

Other notable holdings include Fetternear Palace, located near the scenic River Don — a waterway considered sacred in ancient times and still renowned for its natural beauty and wildlife.

The Clan Feud: Leslie vs. Forbes

One of the most storied feuds in Scottish history involved Clan Leslie and Clan Forbes. It began in the 1400s when Sir Andrew Leslie eloped with Sir John Forbes’ fiancée. Retaliation led to sieges, battles, and deep animosity.

In a surprising twist, the feud ended in the early 1600s when John Forbes of Enzean helped settle the Leslies’ debts and was granted the Barony of Leslie by King James VI — showcasing how historic rivalries could turn into strategic alliances.

Leslie Tartan Colors & Pattern

The Leslie Tartan is bold, elegant, and deeply symbolic. It typically features:

  • Blues – Reflecting Scotland’s rugged hills and rivers.

  • RedsSymbolizing the courage, sacrifice, and warrior bloodline of the clan.

  • Black & Yellow Accents – Adding vibrancy and balance, representing clarity and noble intent.

Leslie Tartan Variations

To reflect the depth of Leslie’s heritage and the personal taste of each wearer, Scottish Attire offers several beautiful variations of the Leslie Tartan:

  • Leslie Ancient – Softer, earthier hues for a traditional, faded appearance.

  • Leslie Modern – Crisp, vivid colors for a modern take on ancestral pride.

  • Leslie Weathered – A rustic, aged look that pays homage to natural dyes and time-worn cloth.

  • Leslie Hunting – Darker, muted tones ideal for Highland pursuits.

  • Leslie Dress – A lighter version, suited for ceremonial wear.

Clan Crest, Motto & Plant Badge

  • Crest: A demi-griffin Proper, beaked and winged in gold — symbolizing strength, vigilance, and nobility.

  • Motto: Grip Fast — A legendary phrase that originated when Bartolf carried Queen Margaret across a flooded river. As she slipped, he yelled “Grip Fast!” and saved her life.

  • Plant Badge: Rue (in flower) — Associated with protection, medicinal strength, and resilience against adversity.

Associated Families & Surnames
