Historical Context
Discover the rich heritage of the Kinnear Tartan, a tribute to the clan’s storied past. Known as Kynnier, the Kinnear clan has a diverse lineage that reflects the Scottish landscape. A crescent rises from a cloud with a star between its horns, surrounded by palm branches, symbolizing celestial connection and resilience. “Errantia Lumina Fallunt” or “Wandering lights deceive” illustrates their unwavering spirit. While initially associated with Perthshire, the clan’s historical importance extends to the Barony of Kinnear near Wormit in Fife. Although the clan currently lacks a recognized chief, its history is deeply rooted in Scottish legend. Until the 18th century, the name “Kinnear” may originate from Gaelic, meaning “west headland.” They served the Priory of St. Andrews’ lands of Kathlac. In 1296, the Kinnears pledged allegiance to Edward I of England and supported the establishment of Protestantism in 1560. As early as 1672, figures such as David Kinnear registered arms to hold a monopoly on the Tay River ferry crossings. Kinnears emigrated to Ireland and later North America as a result of religious conflicts in the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition to notable Kinnear family members in sports and acting, their legacy lives on through notable Kinnear figures.
Tartan Color Scheme and Pattern
A green background is accented by thin stripes of black, red, yellow, and white in the Kinnear Tartan. Each color and stripe pays homage to the clan’s enduring legacy and the lush Scottish landscape. Scotland’s fertile land is symbolized by the rich green, while its strength and resilience are symbolized by the black. Passion and loyalty are symbolized by red, wealth and prosperity are symbolized by yellow, and peace and purity are symbolized by white.
