Historical Significance

The Kennedy Tartan has a fascinating history rooted in ancient heritage. Originating from the Gaelic term for “ugly head,” its name dates back to ancient Ireland. Founded in Carrick, Ayrshire, under the visionary leadership of Gilbert Kennedy, the Kennedys shaped their destiny. Duncan, Gilbert’s son, became the 1st Earl of Carrick in the 12th century, altering their lineage. In the Wars of Independence, they provided unwavering support to the Bruces during turbulent times. In 1457, Gilbert, a descendant of the Kennedy family, became Lord Kennedy, strengthening their repute. Eventually, Ulric Kennedy branched out to Lochaber, creating Clan Ulric, an important sept of the Camerons. Hugh Kennedy of Ardstinchar, who fought alongside Joan of Arc during the English siege of Orleans, exemplified their bravery. Both cruelty and inspiration were dealt by fate. In 1509, the 3rd Lord transformed their legacy into the 1st Earl of Cassillis. In 1513, he tragically met his end on the heart-wrenching battlefield of Flodden. Their enduring legacy lives on in Culzean Castle, an extraordinary fortress commissioned by David, the 10th Earl of Cassillis. Designed by Robert Adam, this architectural marvel has survived centuries of triumphs and tribulations. Due to its significance, General Dwight D. Eisenhower was offered it as a retreat as a tribute to his remarkable wartime achievements.

Color Scheme & Pattern

A vibrant mix of emerald green, navy blue, and pink, accented by subtle white and bright green stripes, makes up the Kennedy Tartan. Emerald green symbolizes Scotland’s rich heritage and natural beauty, while navy blue adds depth and tradition. A playful touch is introduced by the pink lines, while a lively contrast is presented by the bright green stripes. Designed from 100% acrylic wool, this tartan is both durable and comfortable, suitable for traditional as well as contemporary occasions.
