How to Wear a Great Kilt and Care it?

The oldest type of kilt is the Great Kilt, which comes with an additional yard of fabric to fold the kilt. Three to six yards of full-length fabric—roughly 54 to 60 inches wide—are used in making it. Poor people and the shepherd wore this kilt since it was their blanket and cloth simultaneously.

First Tip: Wearing the Great Kilt

1. Put on the belt first, then lie down on the bed, leaving the belt on with your knees at the edge.
2. Lay the kilt fabric on the bed such that the hem edge runs along the bed’s edge.
3. Make sure the fabric has three sections: one half hip of the pleat on each side and one half hip of the apron.
4. With your knees at the bed’s edge, lie down on the kilt.

Lay the cloth under the apron and gently run it over your right side of the body. Then, on the left side, smooth it over your body over the apron. Fasten the belt, keeping the hem level and straight.

Second Tip: How to Put on a Great Kilt

Let’s get right to the second section of the kilt, where you should be wearing the Great Kilt.

1. See the form of the kilt with its plaid.
2. With the left hand, center the apron plaid and take the two ends with the right hand. Bring them together across the left shoulder, and pin them with a plaid brooch.
3. Tuck the plaid underpron end under the belt as far around the left side as you can.
4. Tuck the plaid end of the over-an apron under the belt.
5. From the front, the kilt will now be obvious; from the back, it will not show.
6. Bring the plaid’s center over your head; then, drop the head loop around your neck and fasten it with a brooch. Using both hands at arm’s length on each side, pick up the plaid and bring them together toward the left shoulder. Pin the left shoulder with a brooch.
7. At the back, tuck the whole plaid under the belt. Though it will look fantastic on you, it will be heavy.
8. From the middle of the plaid, take one or several pleats and bring them to the left shoulder. Mark them in place.

How to Fold a Great Kilt?

Let us now turn to the other side, where a great kilt is folding. The procedure follows rather simple guidelines:

1. Set the canvas protective cover on the bed first.
2. Flip the plaid over your head and lay it down on the canvas cover; then, pleat the kilt as you would want it on. Make sure you put the pleats very deliberately.
3. Fold it over the pleated section from the top under the apron.
4. Carefully straighten every wrinkle and fold.
5. Then fold the plaid end of this assembly toward the kilt’s hem edge.
6. Fold the canvas cover over the kilt, tie it, and then tightly roll the kilt from the fold to the hem edge.
7. Finally, close the kilt!
